The B&E Podcast #160 “The Creative Benefits of Appreciating Other's Work" Soundcloud Link: soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST: We've talked at length before about criticism and its pitfalls, but what about the opposite? What happens when we show appreciation for other people's works? Learning to find and give value to the artists we come in contact with can do extraordinary things, even if we're not really a fan. POINT #1: "BLACK & WHITE" - No work is ever just shit nor is it perfect. Usually, we tend to be more critical than praising. Until we can learn to find appreciation in others and their work, whether we subjectively like it or not, we can never offer genuine criticism either. POINT #2: “YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE" - If you find or realize that you are more critical of others than appreciative, chances are it's a reflection on you as well. When we build a critical creative world around us we become fearful to create ourselves. Learning to genuinely appreciate others helps us build a trusting environment for ourselves and others. POINT #3: “OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN" - When a work rubs us the wrong way or upsets us, often it provides a window into ourselves. By asking some questions as to why this is so we may discover some hidden beliefs and unexamined ideologies we have been needlessly carrying.
