One way to deal with self-doubt is to puff out your chest and put an an act like you are a big deal, but this is not a long term strategy. When you are trying to convince yourself or others of something that isn't true you end up being burdened with a secret that you are desperate to keep hidden. You end up feeling alone in the world because your truest self is hidden. Sharing it, being vulnerable, becomes an unaccessible option because doing so would leave you exposed and at risk of losing what you built up in your life. So maybe there is another approach. WOTA #163 - The Great Expanse of Your Nature

When we set out to do something in the world we don't always see that other things, that we are unaware of, are happening for us because of it. We may not realize that these other things are the point.
It's difficult to understand the full impact and scope of what we are doing, especially in the arts. Our intentions may give us a sense of purpose and that might be what is motivating us to do something, but the impacts of doing it may be more. In fact, they are likely more important than the focus point we think we are after.
Our nature will take us to places that we do not fully understand and this is the incredible by-product of an authentic pursuit.
True purpose is expansive and it exists often far beyond our awareness. We are unable to know it until we arrive there, only to begin all over again, into an expansive discovery of something more.

WOTA #159 - What to Expect With Expectations

Expectations can be a major block for us all in life. They can get in the way of the creative process, stop us from stepping into our true potential, and eliminate our openness to other unforeseen possibilities. So let's dive in on how to deal with them better.
First of all, make a commitment to never make a decision out of fear, because if you truly have something to fear your response to it will be automatic.
The fear response is something is built into you as a survival mechanism designed to inform you to run, hide, freeze or fight. This response is a temporary one and it can be an immediate solution to a direct threat. That is all.
Keep in mind, fear overrides our conscious awareness to be rational, thoughtful or mindful until we are safe to do so. There is no value in being fearful without a direct threat that is immediate and present in the moment you are in. Future fear is not real, what you fear in the future is just the idea of fear.
Most of the fear we have does not really exist in reality, it only exists as an idea in our minds. A "what if" that is merely imagined. When you expect fear you exist in "the idea" of fear and you will needlessly suffer because of it.
Most of the time we are actually safe, but we can get in "the idea" of fear and irrationally undermine ourselves. Our expectations can be linked very closely to what might go wrong, or what we think might happen if things do not go right.
Expectations take their roots in fear. The opposite of this is openness, flexibility, adaptability and having the willingness to change plans on the fly when things don't go as expected. Join us as we go down a rabbit hole of finding our creative freedom outside of what is expected or planned for.

You can learn how to do something up until a point, and then you must take it somewhere all on your own. You must find your own way with it, otherwise what you have learned will begin to work against you, instead of for you. The journey for any artist begins with immersing themselves into their craft and learning all the techniques they can to refine their work and achieve better results with more clarity and ease. Although, for their true creative expression to reach out into the hearts and minds of their audience it requires an entirely new level of engagement with their craft. This is found in a place of the unknown and it can be scary because it means letting go of your control and going into an entirely new area of internal exploration. This is often a place that leads you somewhere you have yet to experience or even know of until you arrive at it. In turn you become your own captivated audience member as you are in the middle of doing it, living it and experiencing it.

It's not always about seeing more, it's about seeing deeper. Our perspective is limited no matter how you spin it. We may have many blind spots, but that does not mean we are restricted in our depth of understanding. Emotion and expression are great communicators of meaning and experience. We may not comprehend why something matters to others or even ourselves, but we can "get" that it does matter. Beyond right and wrong is the human experience and art often has a way of bringing it to light. It allows us to see, to feel, hear or experience something that is outside of our realm of perception. We look into perception and how to work with it more creatively as an artistic being.

WOTA #145 - Abandon Your Resolutions

Often people start a new year making resolutions at the beginning of it, but abandon them after a few weeks or months. Why is that? This is what we dig into on this one.
We look at why many of us end up defaulting back into our old ways, our old habits or we simply allow our old patterns dominate us all over again. Part of the problem that we identify in this episode is how we treat our lives, ourselves, or goals, our dreams, our resolutions and sometimes even our relationships as if they are static, unchanging things.
We don't recognize that all these values we have are dynamic, moving targets. We lose sight of the fact that they require a re-evaluation many times over of assessing where we are with them. So, what we must keep in mind is that the things that matter most in our lives are usually changing, they are in a constant state of flux, and so are we.
In many ways we are chasing things that can be moving away from us and it is all about giving them regular attention, and out pacing them from getting too far away from our reach. To do this we need to have a strong and clear "why" that is driving us.
What we need is sound reasoning for the constant energy it takes to pursue or maintain the things that matter most in our lives. We may even need to constantly remind ourselves that they matter and why they matter so we don't get distracted.
The alternative is getting caught up in some arbitrary destination to hit and thinking that when we get there we will be done with it. Instead, look it these destinations as milestones and when you reach one of them evaluate where you are and set where you will take yourself with it next.

By allowing room to make a mistake you develop a creative approach that provides a new form of freedom. This is a great practice for the artist because not only does it help you get out of your own way by not overthinking it, but it allows you to move quickly on your creative impulses. In this one we ended up diving into the concept of how we look at making mistakes and we consider perspectives on removing the fear or resistance we have about them. This one may be something that helps you let go of a need to to do it perfectly or flawlessly and will give you options that were otherwise unavailable.
