B&EP #124 - Learning the Valuable Distinction Between Knowledge & Wisdom

The B&E Podcast #124
“Learning the Valuable Distinction Between Knowledge & Wisdom”
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
On this provocative talk, we endeavor to find what differentiates knowledge -- understanding, information etc, and real wisdom. When it comes to turning knowledge to wisdom, experience is the key.
POINT #1: “WHAT PEOPLE SAY"
- People can tell you all kinds of life lessons and wisdom, but no one can give you wisdom -- only knowledge. Wisdom has to be experienced, or has to touch upon something you have experienced.
POINT #2: “LISTEN"
- Mentors and teachers are an important part in our lives. They can point a direction, provide context or consolation, and attempt to impart wisdom. Ultimately we have to walk our own path and discover for ourselves.
POINT #3: "CRAZY CORNER: BELIEFS"
- We dive into ideas around religion, God, the universe, science, objectivity, and subjectivity, and keeping our opinions in check.

Tuesday Jul 04, 2017
The B&E Podcast #123
“Why Being Honest is the Path to Untapped Potential”
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Seems like we're on a theme around honesty these days -- that's okay, it's a good one. This one is about being honest with ourselves and others, our emotions, detachment, identification, fear, being right, and embracing the unknown. Just another dive down the rabbit hole.
POINT #1: “BEING REAL & BEING POLITE"
-Many of us have a habit of being dishonest about how we're feeling, even to ourselves. We often attribute our reasons for nondisclosure to being polite or nice. When we're not being truthful about where we're at, casting judgment on certain emotions we experience, we do more harm in the long run to ourselves, others, and our work. Finding the courage to be honest without losing kindness gives us a kind of power and peace in our lives.
POINT #2: “STOP IDENTIFYING YOURSELF"
-Part of the problems that arise with our emotions comes in our judgment and identification of them. When we make our emotions mean something about us instead of simply allowing them to flow we create much more pain than is necessary.
POINT #3: "FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN"
-We are so afraid of what we don't know. Whether that's something out in the world or some part of ourselves we don't want to look at, our first response is most often fear. There is so little any of us really know, and clinging onto being right causes more discomfort than embracing the unknown. The unknown is where we learn to thrive and find joy in our lives and our work.

The B&E Podcast #122
“Get Honest With Yourself; Become a Better Artist”
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Ready for another juicy Not So Serious podcast? Hope so cause this one has it in by the tub full. We unlock the power of honesty with ourselves and with others to transform our lives and unleash our expression. When we find the courage to speak truthfully we become the daring artists that the world needs.
POINT #1: “GETTING CLEVER"
-We do lots of things in our lives and our work from a disingenuine place in order to appear "better" than we think we are. When we are masquerading as something we're not we make superficial connections with others because we're focused on winning and competing. In the long run, this does far more harm than good.
POINT #2: “BEING HONEST"
-Being honest is not always easy. Often it goes against everything our instincts are telling us, especially when fear is involved. When we find the courage to get honest first with ourselves, we then find the courage to speak with greater honesty to others, giving them the permission to do so themselves. As artists, we need to speak truthfully to give others expression.
POINT #3: "REAPING THE HARVEST"
-There is a time and a season for everything in our lives. When the fields are just sewn, you cannot expect to reap the harvest the next day. When we learn to move with these cycles in our lives we find opportunities to pursue our needs and interests with greater passion and less frustration.

B&EP #121 - Why We Feel Out of Control & How to Find It

Thursday Jun 29, 2017
The B&E Podcast #121
“Why We Feel Out of Control & How to Find It”
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
What do we actually control? This is a big question we explore and how that pertains to us as artists. We discover that by becoming aware of the things we actually control and don't control, we find greater joy and freedom to create and live.
POINT #1: “CONTROL OF WHAT?"
-There's a lot of things we try to have control or think we have control over but do not. Put simply, if what we are aiming to do involves another person to accomplish, we don't actually have control over it. There is a small part we can command which is our own actual do-able actions and responses.
POINT #2: “HUMBLE PIE"
-We have to eat a little of this every now and then. When we learn to do it willingly we discover it's not so bad. Humility helps us to see what we don't have control over and gain clarity and direction for ourselves to move forward.
POINT #3: "USE THE FORCE"
-By trying to control outcomes that we have no real authority over is not only futile but totally insane. When we let these go we free up energy and to create with more richness and vitality.

“Make Hard Decisions Easy By Getting Honest”
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We always like to think that we do good podcasts, but this one is really damn good. A Not So Serious conversation gets into the whole idea of being selfish, judgments, then steers off into becoming powerful decision makers in our lives. Full of inspiration and practical wisdom. Don't pass this one up!
POINT #1: “BEING SELFISH"
-It's not right to be selfish, self-centered, self-full, etc. There's a ton of judgments around these notions in our culture and it has perhaps led us to devalue the things we truly want to do in our lives. This isn't about being discompassionate or a jerk to others in our desires, but about honouring the people we truly are.
POINT #2: “SELF-HONESTY"
-We often make decisions feeling like we're catering to someone else, growing resentful and watching our own desires fade away. It's vital that we become intimate with our own wants and needs and know that that's okay as well as entirely necessary.
POINT #3: "DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS"
-Indecision will kill you. Making decision will make you happier and alleviate anxiety. Make decisions that are good enough. Trust it. All decisions we make have some kind of positive intention. The outcome we don't know, but they create movement -- then respond. Decide, respond, respond, respond, decide again. Learn to embrace this process and stop making your choices so precious.

Sunday Jun 25, 2017
Sunday Jun 25, 2017
The B&E Podcast #119
“Consciously Changing Your Process to Find Inspiration”
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Change is an unavoidable force in our lives so it's strange we spend so much time resisting it. How can we become friends with this force and unlock all of its potential? There's plenty of inspiration to be found by being a part of change in your life and it doesn't have to be massive.
POINT #1: “INTERESTING FOR INTERESTING"
-If we're making an interesting choice or change for its own sake we'll find ourselves running into some big obstacles. If we get locked into an idea of what we think is interesting, we stop exploring even if it's not working or coming from a genuine place. Follow an interesting idea and see what kind of inspiration comes from it.
POINT #2: “CHANGE IS ALWAYS A WIN"
-Whenever we make some kind of change, it's always a win. The act of change itself is a win. It breaks us out of our comfortable patterns and creates room for new perspectives. Letting go of what we think we want as the outcome is key to discovering all of the benefits.
POINT #3: "DECIDE TO BE PART OF CHANGE"
-Change is going to happen. It's happening around us and it's happening inside us. It is movement. Movement is life. Learn to be a part of the flow of change in your life, trust, even when it's uncomfortable, and discover how to make decisions within that change.

“How to Not Ruin Your Work With Perfectionism”
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
When do you finally call a project? As in, when do you move on? When is enough, enough? When have you edited as far as you can take it? When does it become harmful? We embark on answering some of these questions and discovering that getting over our ideals and perfectionistic tendencies provide the insight needed.
POINT #1: “SIMPLE IS GREAT”
-Part of our problem is that we often think we have to do something so complex from the outset that we set ourselves up for failure. We think it's not enough. Simple can be absolutely fantastic. Learning to trust that and trusting yourself can go a long way in moving forward.
POINT #2: “PERFECTION IS IMPOSSIBLE”
-A big reason we don't move on and put projects behind us is because we have some ideal of perfection in our minds. It's not going to happen. Ever. Going for excellence is productive, going for perfection is frustration.
POINT #3: “MAKE SOME SHIT”
–You're going to make some crap. Especially at first. Probably. That's alright. You're supposed to. You have to get the garbage our first before you can begin to find your own voice. It's okay to put it on the shelf if it just doesn't work.

The B&E Podcast #116
“Not Knowing Makes Artistry a Rewarding Adventure”
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Oh, these Not So Serious talks are so much fun. We break down some of the limiting views on approaching art and industry to reveal a few of the things that actually matter. Express the truth, get out of how you think things should go, and embrace the unknown.
POINT #1: “YOU DON'T KNOW. THAT'S AWESOME”
–Knowing shit is overrated. Trying to know is exhausting. Embracing the moment, embracing that you don't know leaves room for something new to happen in your experience. That's where creativity and artistry lives.
POINT #2: “HOW IT SHOULD GO”
-This one is kind of the cousin of "knowing shit". When we're caught in ideas of how we think things should go out of some sense of idealism or what is right or wrong, good or bad etc. Again, you don't know. You don't know how it should go. There is only how it is actually going and how truthfully you are expressing that.
POINT #3: “ENTER THE UNKNOWN”
– Part of the whole point of art and creating art is to have new experiences beyond what we know. We can't do that if we remain stuck in our own ideas of what we think something looks like. When we enter the unknown we find greater excitement, joy, and new experiences abound!

“Being in the Reality of Your Emotional Life”
Soundcloud Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Emotions!!! Oh yes, those pesky things. Always getting in the way. We talk about changing our relationship to all spectrums of our emotions and finding new freedom in our lives.
POINT #1: “EMOTIONS GONNA HAPPEN"
–You a human? Yeah? Of course, you are. Here's the deal, we have all kinds of emotions going on at all times. There's no avoiding it so let's learn to make peace with all of them.
POINT #2: “JUDGY PANTS”
-In our society, we have methods of dealing with different emotions. We have labeled some as being good and some as bad. When we make some of our emotions bad and wrong we repress which turns into depression.
POINT #3: “THE BOAT ON THE WATER”
- If it helps, think of your emotions as a boat out on open water. When the weather is fair, great, when it's rough you need another kind of energy and awareness. The moral is that all emotions have a place and responsibility - it all comes down to when and how you choose to use them.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
This one is all about learning! No really. Learning. Learning about learning. How we learn, how to learn better and all that. We discuss our egos, finding good teachers, and being better students. Accepting that we don't know anything is a good start.
POINT #1: “I DON'T KNOW"
–When it comes to being a good student and a good learner, throwing out what we think we know and our past experiences can go a long way in making us more open to new lessons.
POINT #2: “THE TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIP"
-It takes at least two people to share ideas and to learn from each other. Both the student and the teacher learn from each other in the process. When there is respect going both ways the relationship thrives and tremendous growth can be gained.
POINT #3: “TAKING RESPONSIBILITY"
-We often look to an authority figure to give us all the answers. This can be a dangerous attitude for both teacher and student. Ultimately we decide what we listen to and who we listen to.

Sunday Jun 11, 2017
The B&E Podcast #113
"The Art of How to Motivate Yourself"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Nothing like a Not So Serious podcast to get into the little problem of motivation. Turns out, it involves rethinking some of our programmings and getting over a lot of social stigmas. When we follow our truest desires of what we want, without shame or guilt, we can create more joyfully and build momentum for taking on the big goals.
POINT #1: "DO WHAT YOU WANT"
-You might be surprised to realize how often we neglect doing what we really want. Sometimes doing what we want may seem counterproductive because we're judging its worth. Maybe doing that thing, no matter how trivial, may be the key to getting the ball rolling -- even if that's watching a movie, or taking a walk, or going out for a coffee.
POINT #2: "REALLY DO WHAT YOU'RE DOING"
-Now that we're doing more of what we want, now we have to actually do it. Really do it. One hundred percent. Even if that is playing video games. So often we don't even really do passive activities -- we're on our phones or thinking about the other things we should be doing. When you're not fully doing something, you're not really doing anything. Commit to work and commit to play, and you'll find more energy and more joy.
POINT #3: "STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES"
-We have our goals and ambitions that require discipline and work. That doesn't mean we have to grind the whole way. Chip away, work towards it, but take time to breathe and enjoy yourself.

The B&E Podcast #112
"A Guide to Working the Webseries Festival w/ Suzette Laqua"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
With the creator/founder of the Vancouver Web Fest, Suzette Laqua, we talk about the incredible potential of creating content for online release. Using festivals and connecting to producers/distributors, this platform is growing every year and unlocking new opportunities for original ideas -- YOUR IDEAS.
POINT #1: "GETTING IN"
-The biggest thing with having success in web fests is still the same with any film in any platform -- a good story. A story with a lot of heart and passion is key to getting in and makes up for what might be lacking in lighting or other technical areas. Those standards are quickly going up though as web series become more and more recognized.
POINT #2: "AUTHENTIC CONNECTIONS"
-When it comes to festivals, many people get scared off at the idea of "schmoozing" at events. Make it less about having to sell yourself and more about making authentic connections by being a real human with someone else and helping them feel comfortable to do the same.
POINT #3: "BELIEVE BABY!"
-It's been said so many times, but you gotta believe in yourself! Doesn't matter how much experience you have or how old you are, if you have an idea and you are excited and passionate about it, believe in it and good things will happen!

The B&E Podcast #111
"The Big Picture of Having an Acting or Writing Career"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
This one takes all kinds of delightful little turns into specific areas concerning acting and writing. From being a beginner to a novice to making a career worth having, there's lots of information and misinformation out there. Let's get honest with each other and with ourselves and make choices from an authentic place.
POINT #1: "NATURAL, CATHARTIC, REALISTIC"
-There are a few trouble spots that actors and writers can get themselves into in their work. Usually, they have something to do with what we think "should" be going on or getting caught up in our own emotions. It's all part of the process and we can learn something from every stage.
POINT #2: "WE ALL BEGIN SOMEWHERE"
-We don't all get the same start or advantages -- that doesn't mean we bemoan our fate and curse others for what we perceive they got and we didn't. Our biggest enemy to starting and creating what we want is ourselves and no one else.
POINT #3: "GETTING CREDIT"
-Many actors and writers start out or fall into the trap of being credit seekers for everything they do. The constant need for validation and recognition is a surefire way to suffocate yourself, your passion, and your career over the long stretch.

The B&E Podcast #110
"The Controversy of Idolizing Artists"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Our conversation starts off with where there always seems to be controversy -- the Oscars. How do we respond when things don't go to plan, or when people with checkered pasts or behavior have ongoing success? It's a sticky soup to be sure, won't you join us?
POINT #1: "HOW ARE WE RESPONSIBLE?"
-It's easy to cast blame but not so easy to see how we have played a role in it all. Truth is, people who do unsavory things are expressions of a systemic problem within our society. If we want to fix problems we need to get to the root of the issue.
POINT #2: "WHAT WILL WE PUT IN THE WORLD?"
-We can choose to put more compassion and forgiveness in the world or we can choose to put more hate and judgment. It's not necessarily easy or about not holding people accountable, but puts our values on the line for questioning.
POINT #3: "WHAT DO WE GIVE MEANING?"
-Ultimately we give everything all of the meaning it has to us. That doesn't mean that it is necessarily THE meaning for everyone and that we're right.

"Being An Artist A Hundred Years In the Future"

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
This episode went in a direction we really didn't expect. We talk about the potential future that the world is going in, and what that means for artists. There's a lot of exciting directions it appears things are going in, and we can begin the future by embodying some of those principles now.
POINT #1: "BE AN EXPLORER"
-Being an artist means going into places you don't know. Walking into a curiosity with no idea how it's going to go or what's going to happen. Embracing the mystery is an incredible freedom and way to discover.
POINT #2: "IT STILL COMES DOWN TO US"
-For all of the things that we create, all of the technology and systems we have to support us, all of the advances yet to come, it all still comes down to ourselves and each other. Ultimately this is where artistry arrives no matter what.
POINT #3: "CREATE FREEDOM"
-How can you create more space, time, room in your life for the deep desires within you? What can you cut out? What doesn't serve you anymore? What is the garbage you tell yourself you need that you actually don't?

Why We Love Film Vol.2: Wax On, Wax Off
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We return to discuss the finer points of some beloved films by ourselves and audiences worldwide. The pictures in review today are Pixar's wonderful "Inside Out", and John G. Avildsen's "The Karate Kid". We break them down on a technical storytelling level and also take time wandering and exploring the deeper thematic elements and ideas these stories were telling.
POINT #1: "INSIDE OUT"
-This modern Pixar classic has depth out the wazoo. There are so many messages and ideas being communicated it will blow your mind. With all the complexity to it, it all comes out of a very simple story concept which is key.
POINT #2: "THE KARATE KID"
-Re-examining a childhood favourite reveals many lessons about humility and the value of struggle in our lives. This is way more than just a story about a bunch of guys who want to punch each other.
POINT #3: "WE DON'T KNOW SOMETIMES"
-Both of these films illustrate this point. We don't often know why certain things happen the way that they do, but it's often exactly what we need.

"Your Convictions As An Artist Define You in the Industry"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
There's so much to be learned from seeing work that leaves you wanting so much more -- not in a good way. We get into some terrific practical and philosophical wanderings about the choices we make as artists and the consequences that come with it.
POINT #1: "SAY SOMETHING HONEST"
-You can tell as fantastical a tale in your work as you want, but it doesn't mean getting away with not saying something meaningful and truthful about our humanity.
POINT #2: "STAND FOR SOMETHING"
-There are times when we may feel pressured to do something in our work or for our careers that goes against what we think is right. Pick your battles, think about what you are trading off, but what are we if we don't have some convictions about what we create?
POINT #3: "BE MINDFUL OF YOUR CAREER"
- Artistic industry can be a fickle creature and sometimes we get opportunities to strike while the iron is hot -- we're in demand and have an audience. It's a terrific place to be in and making good choices can mean the difference between a long career and one that fizzles very quickly.

Wednesday May 24, 2017
Wednesday May 24, 2017
The B&E Podcast #106
"The Creative Bond of True Friendship"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
There's nothing like having friends around when we're in creating. But what does that mean? Yes, we can literally have our friends collaborate with us on projects which open us up to new sides of each other we've never really seen and even deepen our relationships. How about being a friend and giving friendship to all those around you who are involved? What then? What does that do? Find out now!
POINT #1: "FRIENDS, BOUNDARIES, INTIMACY"
-If we're working closely with our friends it's important to be able to remain professional especially since all kinds of unexpected things can happen. Know when you're being a friend, and know when you're assuming another role. When you always respect and value each other, your personal relationships can deepen as a result.
POINT #2: "FAILURE IS SUCCESS"
-We separate failure and success as different things. What if they were part of the same thing? When we stop painting failure in a negative light we can become less afraid of it and offer this perspective to others around us. When creative partners aren't in fear of failing in front of one another, amazing things can happen.
POINT #3: "GIVE FRIENDSHIP"
-We cannot control the kind of friendship others give us, but we can freely give it to whoever we choose. By being supportive of others we're working with, giving them compassion, encouragement, and honesty, we create with more joy and authenticity.

I will never pretend to be 'the one who knows', 'the enlightened one' or some missionary for a conceptual truth so far removed from real-time, immediate, first-hand present experience. I will not get into drama with you, I will not indulge and feed your stories and mental conclusions and fears, I will not mistake who you are for my story about you, my dream of who you are.But friend, I will meet you in the fires of hell, I will hold your hand there, I will walk with you as far as you need to walk, and not turn away, for you are myself, and in the deepest recesses of our experience we are intimately each other, and we cannot pretend otherwise..."

The B&E Podcast #105
"The Artist's Paradox: Getting What You Want By Not Wanting It"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
As many of our Not So Serious podcasts go, this one dives down some interesting rabbit holes. This one may go down as one of our favorites with lots of fun and fascinating insights into many of the struggles we face as artists.
POINT #1: "THE SUCCESS PARADOX"
-When you're carrying around the need for recognition, validation, awards etc. for your work, you almost guarantee yourself not to get them. When you're carrying all of that weight with you, you can't hope to be in the focused, open, passionate state demanded to actually create great work.
POINT #2: "WHERE IT COMES FROM"
-Get down to what it is you really do. What do you really love about it? Why do you love what you're doing? Once you get past all of the crap we pile on top of the pure desire we carry, we find a new depth to our craft. Then we begin to work from a place where our first priority is fulfilling that desire before anything else.
POINT #3: "COMPASSION & TRIBUTE FOR YOURSELF"
-We are awfully hard on ourselves. We often don't feel like we're good enough. But the truth is that no matter how we're feeling, how low or unworthy when we express our genuine truth there is no such thing as good enough. The world is aching for your honesty. Be good to yourself, you are an amazing human being full of all the things that you need to be enough.

"Making a Show When You've Never Made a Show" w/ Banerd & Poague
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
With actor/filmmakers Eric Banerd and Sean Poague, we dive into the trials and joys of producing a new type of work for the first time. Often it means having to make certain compromises and accepting certain limitations but sticking to where it counts.
POINT #1: "BRING YOUR FRIENDS!"
-When our budgets and contacts are limited, we go to what we got and that means friends and family. They may help you out and be very talented, but make sure that they have accountability for the job they've been brought on to do. Don't be afraid to communicate when they're not meeting their end -- this is your baby after all!
POINT #2: "JUST DO IT"
-It works for a big shoe company, why not for budding filmmakers and artists? Don't get too caught up in making it perfect or precious. Work with what you have, bring your best, and bring your passion. You'll learn, grow and get better.
POINT #3: "LET PEOPLE IN"
-When you have friends and people coming in working for nothing or next to nothing, it's very easy for responsibility to slip. One way to avoid this is to make sure you communicate your passion to everyone you bring in. Express why you're doing this, the messages your telling, and why that's important and you'll find the people around you injecting their best efforts and talents as a result.

Wednesday May 17, 2017
The B&E Podcast #103
"Finding Peace in the Messy Reality of Our Dreams"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
This one is all about our dreams and our expectations and how if we're not mindful, they can end up strangling us. This one is juicy and poised to maybe shift some of your perceptions.
POINT #1: "IDEAS OF DESIRE"
-Our dreams are wonderful and idealistic and fanciful, but early on can be full of naivete. Many of the aspects of our dreams aren't what we truly want but are things we think we should want based on outside influences and social programming.
POINT #2: "GETTING OVER RIGID DREAMS"
-We don't often associate the concept of rigidity with dreams --thinking of dreams as being boundless and unrestricted. Yet we very often become stuck on certain aspects of our dreams unfolding or looking a certain way that we miss out on new opportunities with the unexpected twists and turns of life.
POINT #3: "EMBRACING THE MESSY BEAUTY OF THE DREAM"
-Things never go to plan, or never exactly. That's life. That's reality. Those unexpected turns can help us dispose of the superficial aspects of our dreams guiding us to a more authentic and meaningful path. It's not giving up, it's growing up and evolving to a dream that is a little messier and a lot more beautiful.

"The Transition Stages of an Evolving Artist" w/ Mark Mulhearne Pt.2
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Continuing where we left off with artist Mark Mulhearne, we get into how we can make being uncomfortable an ally and much less painful. In addition, we talk about the goals we set for ourselves and the process of being a humble learner.
POINT #1: "STRUGGLE IS WISDOM"
-We can get caught in comfortable routines only to have realizations or circumstances change and throw everything into seeming chaos. It can be uncomfortable but without it, we never learn and never grow. Make a friend with struggle and begin to see it as the key to leveling up.
POINT #2: "WHAT IS IT ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT?"
-Often we set goals because we think that its final attainment will give us a lasting fulfillment of some kind. This is typically a trap. Imagine the feeling of what it will take to do it, the process of getting there, and if it excites you. If it doesn't you should question why you want the goal in the first place.
POINT #3: "A SLAP IN THE FACE AND A WARM BATH"
-Transitioning, transforming, and evolving can feel harsh and abrasive. Take it as a wake-up call. Listen and remember to take care of yourself while sorting it all out. Being hard on yourself for having a hard time does nothing to serve you.

"The Transition Stages of an Evolving Artist" w/ Mark Mulhearne Pt.1
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
There's a lot of learning as we grow up as artists, figuratively and literally. With artist and illustrator Mark Mulhearne, we discuss the growing pains and changes in our perception as our creativity matures without losing a childlike heart.
POINT #1: "DO IT!"
-You are the artist you've been waiting for. There's a laundry list of reasons we tell ourselves, and faults we beat ourselves up with that stop us from creating. If you love this creative thing you're in, then do it whether there's money involved or not.
POINT #2: "DON'T FOOL YOURSELF"
-We can convince ourselves of anything but fool ourselves of nothing. When we've been putting our passions off, there WILL come a point where it becomes painful enough where we have to choose to let it go or really commit to it.
POINT #3: "DON'T GIVE UP ON YOURSELF"
-It doesn't matter how long you've been out of the game, it's never too late to be what you might have been. Don't beat yourself up and don't give up on yourself. There is infinite expression waiting to come through your voice.

"All the Lessons Learned" w/ Kat Karpoff & Owen Laukkanen

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We celebrate our one-hundredth podcast with a few returning guest for a creativity, artistry, industry roundtable of epic proportions. We talk about lessons we've learned over the last year and truths we continue to run into with our processes. Hope you enjoy!
POINT #1: "SHIT ON THE WALL"
-When it comes to being a creative professional, the biggest thing that separates is the ability to create and put it out there. Being more talented or skilled often has little to do with generating success.
POINT #2: "GOOD, BAD... WHAT'S TRUTHFUL?"
-It's almost impossible to know what's actually good and bad, so trying to determine what that is while you're creating becomes a defeating process. Focus on being truthful and trust that making it "good" is built in.
POINT #3: "BEING HUMAN"
-We face ups and we face downs. This is part of being a human. Instead of making it wrong, we can accept it as part of our journey and find light in the darkness and wisdom in our struggles.

"Allowing Your Own Authentic Experience to Direct You"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Learning through experience is the most profound of teachers. The only way we can achieve this is through trusting the process we're in which opens us up to fully taking it in. It isn't necessarily the fastest way of learning but is far more life-changing than simply being told the answers.
POINT #1: "EXTEND YOURSELF TO TELL STORIES"
-As storytellers of any kind, to reach the level of artistry we need to put ourselves beyond our own limitations. Sometimes that means really trying a new perspective or circumstance on for ourselves that moves us in ways we've never experienced before.
POINT #2: "EXPERIENCE IS THE GREATEST TEACHER"
-Not just external experiences, but our internal experiences of creating can teach us things about our process that can transform our philosophies for a lifetime.
POINT #3: "TRUTH IS THE GAME"
-Getting over our own egos, our image, our low or high sense of self, even the idols we hold dear can get in the way of creating in our most authentic voice. A good part of the battle of creating art is getting past our own bullshit.

"When You Feel Out of Control, Take the Wheel" w/ Michael David Stewart
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
What happens when we find ourselves in a place of confusion and disconnected from a sense of purpose? Sometimes our entire foundation of what we have been doing and thinking completely comes apart. It's a hard situation to be in, but there are incredible lessons we can learn in this place that can help us find a deeper connection to ourselves and what we do, redefining who we are as artists.
POINT #1: "WHAT AM I EVEN DOING?"
-Suddenly you're hit with that moment while in the pursuit of what you thought you wanted to do, isn't what you want to do. It can be a total mind@#$%, and a terrifying one at that. Good news is that once you've hit that point, you're on your way to figuring it out. What do you REALLY want to do?
POINT #2: "CREATING FROM THE DARKNESS"
-Staying creative while wrestling with our struggles can manifest in some extraordinary ways. It can help get it out of us and see it in a new light as well as prevent us from wallowing in misery.
POINT #3: "NO ONE KNOWS WHAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU"
-Ultimately we decide what we do. We choose where we will go. So make those choices and follow your passion. The time is now. You are the person you've been waiting for. Get busy creating and connecting.

"Clearing Out the Basement of Our Fears & Childhood Dreams"
Soundcloud Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
On another spitball session, we talk about balancing our logic and emotion to achieve optimal creative states as well as taking responsibility and taking a look at the things that we have let stop us from going for our dreams. You know, the "uussh".
POINT #1: "LOGIC & EMOTION"
-When it comes to the creative process, utilizing our logic AND emotion where they function best helps us to achieve the best result. When they're working together and in harmony... oh yes!
POINT #2: "TURN ON THE LIGHT"
-We like to bury all kinds of stuff deep down, forgetting about it, not realizing that there's all this clutter piled up and weighing us down. Time to turn the light on it. It's not gonna be pretty, and it might get worse before it gets better, but it's the only way to begin clearing out what doesn't serve you.
POINT #3: "THE TIME IS NOW"
-Now that you're clearing this out, taking responsibility for all this "stuff", it is time to decide to make steps towards your dreams. Real steps. No reason to beat yourself up for "lost time" -- choose to be a warrior for your dreams.

"The Poetry of Light & Dark" w/ Christine Bissonnette
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
What we thought was going to be a conversation about having more fun in the creative process turned into an exploration of our duality of light and dark. By learning to embrace this experience in our lives, we can learn to have more fun and communicate on a richer and deeper level.
POINT #1: "GIFTS FROM THE DARK"
-We don't always get to live in a happy-go-lucky, everything is perfect state. Sometimes that's not so bad. Our encounters with sorrow and depression can teach us a lot about what has meaning in our lives and give us greater empathy for others. Now create.
POINT #2: "WRESTLING WITH WHAT IS"
-The way events unfold in our lives don't always go how we think. Life has a way of altering our plans and offering us opportunities for greater growth and understanding of who we are. Learning to embrace this and enjoy it a little more helps us thrive as creatives.
POINT #3: "WE ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE"
-The more we learn how we have the power to choose our experience of the world, the quicker we can get to creating with greater aliveness. You might not agree when you're in a rut -- show yourself compassion, let it go, and choose to see it differently.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
"If we could just let go a little more, who knows what we could create." Wow. This quote from our guest is the centrepiece for this fantastic conversation on creativity process and learning to embrace some of our powerlessness in grappling with the process.
POINT #1: "RIDE THE WAVE"
-We don't control much of how creativity or inspiration works. It has a life of its own. If we fight it, we will get tossed and smashed under the waves. If we learn to embrace it and work with it, we can achieve something amazing.
POINT #2: "FOOLS OF THE TRADE"
-We can fight technology, we can fight the tools, we can curse them, we can get aggravated, but in the end, it's all neutral. We decide our involvement with it, and how much we engage with it. We still decide its influence in our lives.
POINT #3: "HUMBLE PIE"
-Humility can serve us as artists in profound ways. It helps us detach, it helps us find freedom, and helps us surrender to the creative process.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
With our guest, journalist/radio host/producer/writer/littlebitofeverything Samantha Gordon, we discuss and tangent on this whole problem of making our dreams into realities. We try and shift some perceptions, offer some practical advice, as well as have a few laughs along the way. Come get your inspiration fix.
POINT #1: "STILL ABOUT THE WHY AND THE VISION"
-Without having a deep connection to not only our vision, but the why of our vision, we won't have the fuel or the fire needed for the journey to achieving our goals. Don't skip spending some time with this fundamental part.
POINT #2: "ACTION IS THE ONLY WAY"
-After we are connected to our dream, our why, and made it a goal, we have to take action no matter how small the first step. Pursue it as though it WILL come true, but don't sit back and expect it.
POINT #3: "SERENDIPITY"
-When we've set our minds to something and have begun making steps towards it, opportunities have a way of showing up. Pay attention and say yes to the possibilities that present themselves.

"Patience is the Key to Process"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We uncover the profound power of having patience towards yourself and your goals. If we can learn patience, we can learn process, trust, and even joy in pain. Say whaaaaat!?
POINT #1: "PATIENCE TAKES OFF THE PRESSURE"
-When we can get over our desire for immediate gratification in the pursuit of a more fulfilling life goal, we must accept that it will take time. Then we can begin to enjoy the journey a little more, becoming more accepting of what may come up along the way.
POINT #2: "IT'S ALL A HIKE!"
-When we go for a hike, sometimes there's a flat path, other times it's a steep incline. Sometimes our legs will be burning with exhaustion and fatigue but that's all part of it. Does that mean we shouldn't enjoy it? Does that mean we shouldn't do it? Sometimes it just means we need to slow down or catch our breath, but it doesn't mean we've stopped our given up.
POINT #3: "PATIENCE ALLOWS 'THE FLOW'"
-Patience is actually important to allowing the most powerful part of our mind do its job, that is, the subconscious. But it needs time to let things stew. Choose to do something, put your mind to it, and let your subconscious stew over it. You'll find it all coming together as if out of nowhere.

The B&E Podcast #092
"We're All Storytellers By Nature"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Whether we're telling the story of how our day went, the things that have happened in our lives, or that next great novel, story is one of our most defining traits as human beings. Telling our stories can help us transcend our current limitations, and help us to grow and evolve as long as we're paying attention to how we are choosing to look at it.
POINT #1: "WE'RE ALL FULL OF STORIES"
-Whether you're an artist or not, we're all telling stories. Telling stories to ourselves, our friends and family, our partners etc. Storytelling is as much a part of our lives as breathing. It can help us to make sense of our world, feel connectedness, and empower us.
POINT #2: "STORY FOR PERSPECTIVE"
-Storytelling allows us to connect, empathize and understand lessons in a deeper and more profound way than simply being told the moral.
POINT #3: "TELLING A NEW STORY"
- We so often get caught up in a certain telling of a story we're very intimate with. However, we always have new perspectives waiting to be found if we're open to it. This can be especially important within the context of our own lives and the painful stories we hang onto. Story can empower us to re-frame how we see our lives and liberate us from beliefs that no longer serve our goals.

"Reconnecting to Our Artistic Roots w/ Thalia Couture"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
With musician and artist Thalia Couture, we dive into the value of going back to the first things that inspired us to become artists. Sometimes where we end up isn't where we started or first imagined ourselves going, but it's all valuable experiences when you treat it thoughtfully.
POINT #1: "WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE"
-We can often lose sight of why we begin our creative journeys and get lost in the daily race of progress only to realize we feel disconnected from what we're doing. Sometimes going back to what inspired it all gets us back on track and clarifies our direction.
POINT #2: "CREATE IN OTHER WAYS"
-Finding a creative outlet that is different from what you pursue as a career and only for yourself is essential to keeping the well full and inspiration moving.
POINT #3: "PURGING OURSELVES"
-Our present lives have a way of making their way into our work whether we're entirely conscious of it or not. One thing is for sure, don't be surprised to look back on an old work to discover a depth of theme and emotion that you didn't even realize you were creating at the time.

The B&E Podcast #090
"Who Knows What the Hell We Discussed"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We dive into some really deep stuff about humanity and our egos before talking a little bit about film and film adaptations. There's lots of good stuff in here -- there may be some sifting involved, but ultimately -- "do what you gotta do".
POINT #1: "HUMANITY IS THE FIRST LESSON"
-As artists, we are often allured to approaching our work from a technical standpoint first. The first thing an artist needs to be is a fully alive, compassionate human. When we connect to that our techniques are then informed by a deeper awareness.
POINT #2: "YOUR EGO IS A NUTJOB"
-The ego will tell you you're no good and that there's no sense in trying. Then, if you listen to it, it will tell you you're lazy and will never amount to anything. It's a losing game when you follow the voice of the ego. Just so you know.
POINT #3: "KNOW THYSELF"
-Knowing yourself isn't about identifying yourself as this or that, it's about recognizing how our experiences connect us to all of humanity. The rest is all play.

"Why Simplicity is the Melody of Art w/ Matt Cairns"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
With musician Matt Cairns, we explore how we see our inspiration through to its completion by understanding every step of the process and not getting hung up on nailing it right away. Songwriting, screenwriting and other manners of art are brought together in some universal principles.
POINT #1: "SIMPLE, SIMPLE, SIMPLE"
-Starting with the simple point of inspiration is where it all begins whether it's a four-chord melody or a story about a plane crashing in the desert, keeping things simple allows us to keep it manageable, move forward, and refine in the future.
POINT #2: "NOTHING'S PERFECT, IT'S PROCESS"
-As artists, we often measure our work up to the greatest before we've really given ourselves a chance. No work was ever amazing or perfect right away, they all took time and had many faults of their own before becoming something remarkable.
POINT #3: "DON'T GIVE UP"
-People rarely fail at anything, but they do give up. Our commitment is often the biggest deciding factor in our success commercially. Stay connected to what you love and keep going!

Saturday Apr 15, 2017
The B&E Podcast #088
"Seeing the Art in Social Media"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Social media is here to stay. No matter how much we might want to resist that, there's no sense in denying its impact on the world we live in and how powerful a tool it can be. The trouble is how we find a way that works for us as artists to make use of it that doesn't compromise our integrity. As it turns out, social media draws some very similar parallels to how we navigate artistic industry in other ways.
POINT #1: "IT'S STILL ABOUT GIVING VALUE"
-If you've listened to us recently, the new way of promoting and marketing yourself and what you do is to offer something with no expectation of getting anything back. Give something that is of value, whether that's an article, a cause or some words of wisdom and do it consistently.
POINT #2: "NO MORE B.S."
-Forget about trying to look a certain way. People have little to zero tolerance for disingenuous people. Be who you are, share things that you actually find valuable and you'll create real connections with people with similar passions and interests.
POINT #3: "IT CAN BE AN ART"
-Like working within other frameworks of our creative industries, there are certain techniques and limitations to be aware of, but ultimately we create the content that we are putting out there. We can learn to look at social media as just another way of extending our artistry into the world.

POINT #1: "FIGHT CLUB; ALMOST FAMOUS; WHIPLASH"
-A handful of our personal favourites, do not disappoint as subjects for discussion and examination. We discover ideas and themes we never realized ourselves.
POINT #2: "THE MARRIAGE OF STRUCTURE AND THEME"
-By following the guideposts of classic story structure we can reveal theme and discover the deeper meanings being communicated through story.
POINT #3: "GO FOR BIG CONCEPTS"

B&EP #086 - A Guide to Getting Rid of Fear to Get What You Want

The B&E Podcast #086
"A Guide to Getting Rid of Fear to Get What You Want"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
This one travels through lots of fascinating and somehow related topics about offering value to others, the power of our minds, and how we can move through fears to reconnect with our dreams. Hold on folks, this one stirs the pot.
POINT #1: "START THINKING ABOUT THE VALUE YOU GIVE"
-When our minds are in a place of scarcity and lack, we get absorbed by how we are going to "get" things. Shifting ourselves into giving something of value to others without expectation of what we'll get opens us up to more abundance in many ways. Find what makes you feel valuable for simply giving it and watch how the world reciprocates.
POINT #2: "YOUR MIND IS A SUPERPOWER"
-The ability of our minds is absolutely astounding! We decide how we want to use it. We get to choose how we want to experience our lives and creating our work! When negative voices are getting loud, you can decide not to listen and tell yourself a different story!
POINT #3: "SO WHAT AND WHAT IF"
-Most of us are unknowingly caught in a mental pattern of saying "what if" to our fears, and "so what" to our dreams. Brain Hack! Reverse the order to say "so what" to our fears, and "what if" to our dreams. In this way we can see the exciting potential of our deepest desires and the illusory nature of our anxieties.

"Letting Go of the Past So You Can Create in the Present"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Holding onto our past experiences can often limit us and our ability to create freely in our present. By looking at our past and releasing old patterns and programming we open space to take responsibility and reclaim our power and authenticity.
POINT #1: "FORGIVE YOURSELF"
-We all have pasts. We all have things we may wish we handled differently. Holding those things against ourselves only puts restrictions on us now. Forgive yourself for your past, ignorance, and limitations so you can let them go.
POINT #2: "WE PROJECT THE WORLD OUT"
-We like to think that we are products and determined completely by our environment. In reality, while not unaffected by pressures and others projections around us, we ultimately choose how we look at the world and how we will be. Check with your values to ultimately discover where your authenticity and joy lies.
POINT #3: "JUDGMENTS ON THE PRESENT"
-Our judgments are based on our past experiences and they are not always the truth. Most often they are perceptions. When we bring our past judgments into our work we may fail to discover the depths of where we could go, instead substituting our own contrived notions.

"Bringing the World Together in Art w/ Henry J Mah"
Soundcloud Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
With our fantastic guest, Henry J Mah, we dive into the role politics and diversity play in the world, how that affects our art, and how we create. It comes down to whether we're actively bringing the world together or driving it apart and how as artists we have a great deal of influence.
POINT #1: "COME TOGETHER"
-Artists are still human beings first. When the world seems to be wrapped in fear and divisiveness, we can use our mediums to inspire our connection to each other. This may ultimately be the greatest thing we can give as artists in our work.
POINT #2: "STRIVING FOR MEANING"
-Not that there is anything wrong with success, wealth, or fame, but at some point we all come to a place where we desire a greater sense of purpose, meaning and connection to each other.
POINT #3: "THE HEARTBEAT OF LIFE"
-Our lives and careers have ups and downs, it's a fact of life. Learning to accept this and in some ways see it as necessary helps us through the times that aren't all roses and sunshine.

"Take the Time to Make it Personal"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We overlook our personal connection to our work more often than we think. Whether we have been contracted to create something or if it's our own project, we need to be deeply, emotionally connected to it. We need to feel the desire to make our creations regardless of what may come of them. When we have this level of meaning, we run into fewer blocks along the way to making our best works.
POINT #1: "WOULD YOU DO IT ANYWAY?"
-No matter what might happen with your work, do you still feel a strong emotional desire to do it? To reveal your message, to tell this story, to say something burning inside you? You should be getting as much out of the works you are creating as your potential audience. When you're tapped into that you will find the power to blast through your walls and get it done.
POINT #2: "JUDGMENT REMOVES HUMANITY"
-When we cast judgment on the subjects of our art, it doesn't matter how powerful the message or passion we feel, we cut out the humanity that is so essential to our audience connecting to it in a more profound way.
POINT #3: "FAME SHMAME"
-Fame is a strange thing to make as our ultimate goal in life. It will make our pursuits lifeless and won't fill the human void we feel, which compelled the goal in the first place. Feeling worthy comes from doing what feels worthy to you.

The B&E Podcast #082
"Video Games: Art or Simply Entertainment?"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We've brushed on it before, but today we go full force on the topic of video games - one of the most significant forms of expression of the modern era. We discuss some of the interpretations of art and how video games meet many of those "criteria". If art is about experience then video games has the potential to deliver in a way other forms of media cannot. That's not to say all of them will.
POINT #1: "GIVE US AN EXPERIENCE"
-Robert Motherwell said, "Art is an experience, not an object". If this is the case, then video games would have to be classified as such. In fact, video games can give us experiences beyond mindless entertainment and adrenaline rushes to offer real emotional impact.
POINT #2: "VIDEO GAMES AS AN OUTLET"
-There's been a lot of stigma around video games perpetuating violence, but there's more evidence to support that they can be a valuable source for people to get out aggression and express themselves in a way that is healthier and doesn't harm others.
POINT #3: "GAMES HAVE THE SAME CHALLENGES"
-When it comes to other art forms in comparison to video games, they share a lot of common traits and issues. Subjective, divisive, and demanding some kind of response, ultimately it comes down to the creators and the eye of the beholder.

"Prioritizing Between Creativity & Logic"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Our free-for-all conversation hits some amazing discoveries on the nature of our mind/minds in our processes and works. We learn that there are some profound gains by setting focused priorities in multiple stages of creating. Give space to your creative mind, and to your logic mind, just not at the same time.
POINT #1: "YOU CONTROL ONLY WHAT YOU CONTROL"
-Focus on what you're actually in control of, which means letting go of results. There's nothing wrong with having goals and ambitions, but when that's all it's about you may find becoming strenuous and uninspired.
POINT #2: "LET YOUR ARTIST DO HIS/HER JOB"
-When you're creating, let your artist take the reigns and do what it does best -- CREATE. In order for your work to be at its best your artist needs to be given one hundred percent focus on where it shines. Once it's done, the logical, industrial mind can step in and do what it does best.
POINT #3: "DON'T CROSS THE STREAMS!"
-Knowing when the editing, logical, evaluative mind is sticking its nose where it doesn't belong is imperative to creating with courage and boldness. When that voice enters your head asking "is this any good", "will people like this" etc know that it's not doing anything to help you while you're in creative mode. That voice is useful only after your initial inspiration is down. Likewise, don't bring your artist voice into the room when evaluation time begins.

"The Responsibility of Becoming a Major Player"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Today we get a little philosophical with it. As we get more success as artists, climbing the ladder so to speak, our reach and impact with our audience grows. Does that mean we have a greater obligation and responsibility in terms of our work and lifestyle? We explore the potential influence we have on the world and what that means for us as growing artists.
POINT #1: "JAWS!!!"
-It was a film about a fictional great white shark which subsequently resulted in the hunting and mass destruction of a habitat. Was the film responsible? Probably not entirely, but its influence is pretty evident.
POINT #2: "BE MINDFUL"
-It's impossible to know what the full impact of our work and/or celebrity might be in the world. The best thing we can do is to try and be as mindful as possible about the potential destructive outcomes on society as a whole from the messages we're putting out.
POINT #3: "WE'RE ALL RESPONSIBLE"
-This is not about blaming any one person, organization, or group for the bad things that happen in the world. When you really look at it, we all have a role to play. Ultimately are you trying to put something of light into society to create positive change?

"Build the Safety to Unleash Your True Expression"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Are you used to this yet? Not so serious gets into it deep once again where we uncover the things that get in our way of creating. From our egos and the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, we discover a pretty crazy mindset that doesn't serve our best interests at heart. Finding safety offers bold expression, freedom, and joy.
POINT #1: "GET TO KNOW YOUR EGO"
-We all have an ego that limits our ability to go beyond our current abilities. When we listen to our ego we stay stuck in our past, unable to surprise ourselves and make new discoveries. The ego is constantly with us so learning to recognize when and where it's leading us helps to detach ourselves from its chains.
POINT #2: "FORGET FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT"
-'Fake it till you make it' has been a long held colloquialism that still receives too much credit than it deserves. It can help give you a momentary boost in confidence to gain some experience with something you're feeling not certain in, but it's never more than short term. A better approach might be to admit where you are with honesty and humility -- you may find there's more people willing to help and support you.
POINT #3: "WE MAKE OURSELVES UNSAFE TO CREATE"
-Even when we're working at home, in our office, in our bedroom or wherever it is, we make doing our work unsafe to do even when we're completely by ourselves. That's not a product of someone else, that's us! That's the story we keep telling ourselves. That's the demons we haven't shone a light on. If we are going to create with any level of freedom, we need to feel safe, and that means looking at what inside is making us feel unsafe.

The B&E Podcast #078
"The Misconception about Staying Consistent"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
As artists, we have this constant battle with consistency in the quality of our work as well as in our everyday commitment. There are a lot of band-aid solutions to the problem of consistency, but they are themselves inconsistent. We discover that the solution lies in the realms of trust and truth which are deeper issues to deal with and perhaps provide the key to all of it.
POINT #1: "CONSISTENT QUALITY ISN'T IN CONTROL, IT'S IN TRUTH"
-We often pursue consistency through attaining a greater sense control in surface level methods and tools. We've been taught to deal with it in this way, but when it comes to art, this is typically counterproductive. When we stop trying, pushing, grappling for control, we open up to presence and truth which give us a new level of consistency in our work.
POINT #2: "COMPASSION FOR WHERE WE ARE OR WERE"
-Being able to admit to how we feel about where we are or were with compassion releases us from our judgments towards ourselves in the now. Remember, compassion is the recognition that we are doing the best we can within our current beliefs and capacities. No need to beat yourself, move forward with new knowledge and awareness and accept where you're at.
POINT #3: "TRUST BLOWS IT WIDE OPEN"
-Trust is one of the biggest underlying issues when it comes to attaining some level of consistency in our work. When we don't trust, we avoid where we're at, push for control where we don't have any, and doubt ourselves the whole way. Learning to trust ourselves and where we are unlocks our potential no matter how we're feeling.

"Challenging Order to Find the Humanity In Art"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Our society is full of social norms and expectations that simply make little to no sense. Often we hang onto them without the awareness that they are limiting our creative ability and restraining our expression, as artists and as human beings. By examining the stigmas that surround us, we find a wealth of substance to learn, grow and share in our art, while also freeing ourselves and opening our humanity.
POINT #1: "WE HAVE ALL BEEN CONDITIONED"
-From a very early age, we are all being influenced and indoctrinated into what's "appropriate" for society. Problem is that a lot of these ideas are somewhat baseless, and in the grand scheme of life completely meaningless.
POINT #2: "TIME TO ASK SOME QUESTIONS"
-Challenging and questioning what we accept as normal in our society is prime ground for an artist. By discovering the ridiculous nature of some of our rules we can express it through our art form and make others question for themselves.
POINT #3: "CONDITIONING SHAPES EVERYTHING"
-We are all products of our environment and conditions -- some people are considered well adjusted, others are outcasts of society, and everything in between. When we can learn to see our world in this way, we awaken a compassion and understanding for one another that adds new depth to our humanity and our work.

B&EP #076 - What to Do When It‘s a Slog & a Struggle

Saturday Mar 18, 2017
The B&E Podcast #076
"What to do When It's a Slog & a Struggle"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We were literally struggling today and we decided to make it our topic for discussion. It went deeper than either of us expected. We learned that there is a lot to learn when we find ourselves in moments of struggle. What we discovered is that admitting it to ourselves is key to moving through it and finding extraordinary growth within ourselves.
POINT #1: "ADMIT IT, YOU'RE STRUGGLING"
-As we have heard so many times, the first step is admitting. When we can admit that we are struggling, without harsh judgments of ourselves, we can stop putting ourselves in a victim position and be more proactive.
POINT #2: "SHIFT GEARS, RESET EXPECTATIONS"
-After we have acknowledged our situation for what it is, we can change our expectations and focus on what we can actually do and where we can make progress.
POINT #3: "THERE'S GOLD IN THERE"
-When we find ourselves swearing at the computer or bemoaning the circumstances and limitations, it's usually an indication of something much deeper going on. When we dig in and shine a light on it, we can discover limiting beliefs that can be a catalyst to healthy change. We learn to embrace struggle as a necessary means to our evolution.

"The Relationship Between Artistry & Industry"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Not So Serious conversations are always interesting, and this one is no different. We talk about how the artists journey is often just that -- a journey. It's a long one, with many unexpected twists and turns. On the quest there are many pressures no matter what your level of success. What matters is having a strong sense of yourself in the world, being informed, and making conscious decisions.
POINT #1: "YOU'RE IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL"
-If you have chosen the life of an artist, you have chosen a calling that may or may not pay off large dividends for some time. When you're committed to your artistry with that understanding you can enjoy the many twists and turns and find that great success might not come until you're a seasoned veteran.
POINT #2: "WHETHER YOU'RE BIG OR NOT, BETTER KNOW THYSELF"
-No matter what your success level in what you're doing, if you have no sense of yourself and what you value, you will be blown around and buckle under the pressures around you. There are times to act and there are times to step back -- learn to recognize what's called for within yourself.
POINT #3: "THE INDUSTRY SERVES SOMETHING IMPORTANT"
-As much as we love to dump on the industry as artists, we neglect that the industry actually serves a very important role that we could all learn from -- the audience. The industry is committed one hundred percent to the audience which is something we can all benefit from keeping in mind.

Tuesday Mar 14, 2017
The B&E Podcast #074
"There Are No Perfect Conditions, Only Fears to be Faced"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
In the long list of reasons and excuses we give ourselves to avoid creating, a big one is about not having the circumstances or conditions to flourish. Usually, these are superficial rationalizations covering our deeper insecurities and fears around our work. When we can get a broader sense of our ideas around perfectionism, we can strive for excellence while owning our fallibility.
POINT #1: "CIRCUMSTANCES ARE SHALLOW"
-When we start telling ourselves a story around not having the tools or perfect situation to do our best work, we sell ourselves short and limit our creative ability. Not only that but usually they're thin veils for deeper fears and anxieties.
POINT #2: "CONDITIONS ON CREATIONS ARE PARALYSING"
-We often put a lot on our ideas and projects, as in we feel a kind of obligation for everything we do to be a massive success. Such an expectation restricts our potential as artists. Not everything can, needs, or has to be anything more than your best effort and expression.
POINT #3: "THE EGO HIDES BEHIND PERFECTION"
-Perfectionism is the refusal to move forward. When we get caught in the trappings of perfectionism, we make very little movement all in the name of staying comfortable and avoiding criticism.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
This Not So Serious Podcast really found some legs after revisiting some material we covered in the past. We gain new insights in regards to creative partnerships, practical discipline, setting goals, materialism, social programming, and how we find our voice as artists. Settle in and engage!
POINT #1: "VALUE YOUR CREATIVE PARTNERS"
-Artists find themselves very often collaborating with others. By staying connected to what you value in each other, and trusting in one another, you allow room for everyone to shine while keeping open communication.
POINT #2: "GROWTH IS THE GOAL"
-When you set your goals to growth in any form it takes, suddenly things that might have looked like a failure become opportunities. Growth is a constantly achievable goal that still keeps us moving forward despite external results.
POINT #3: "FIND YOUR VALUES, FIND YOUR VOICE"
-As artists, we are charged with being passionate participants in our own lives and in the world. We must question and examine our thoughts and feelings about the things we are taking in if we are to create meaningful art.

The B&E Podcast #072
"What Movie Not to Make w/ Steve Moody"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We get together with screenwriter Steve Moody to rag on all of the elements in movies that drive us crazy. In between, we find some useful insights into the things that do work and the kind of perceptions that work for us as screenwriters and artists.
POINT #1: "EVERY MOMENT MATTERS"
-Often we get caught up on "big moments" we envisioned from the beginning of a work. That's a great point of inspiration but when you leave everything hanging on just a few pieces, the whole thing will fall apart. Be open and discover great things where you didn't anticipate you would.
POINT #2: "SIMPLICITY OPENS POSSIBILITIES"
-When you begin from a place where you are trying to make something complex and layered and profound you've made the task impossible. By starting with a simple idea you help ensure your audience's ability to follow what you're doing, then you can layer and find complexity after.
POINT #3: "BE HONEST AND DO IT WITH HEART"
-Avoiding melodrama has a lot to do with not trying to force drama to occur where none exists. Work within your sense of human relationship and put your heart into it. When you combine these elements you may not create the perfect work, but you may really touch a lot of people.

"The Line Between Stealing & Inspiration"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
When and how does taking inspiration from someone else's work become straight up plagiarism? We discover some potential answers that reveal a complex territory that leaves plenty of room for us to grow and learn as artists.
POINT #1: "ARTISTRY GOES THE EXTRA MILE"
-Copying keeps us in a place that is safe and "fine". Our artistry urges us to move beyond that and explore where else we can take it -- becoming inspiration.
POINT #2: "LEARN TO TRUST THE VOICE OF YOUR EXPERIENCE"
-When we learn to trust that we have lived unique lives and experiences, we connect more deeply to our authentic artist voices and offer them fuller expression in our work.
POINT #3: "STEALING COMES FROM TRYING TO BE RIGHT"
-Trying to be right works against us as artists. When we are trying to be right and not trusting our voices, we will find ourselves in the tendency to copy what others have done with no trace of ourselves left.

The B&E Podcast #070
"Honouring the Idealist & Realist in Yourself"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Not so serious takes us into an idealistic chat about idealism that takes some delightful turns that surprised even us. We discuss the value of the idealist/realist dilemma and what both views serve to our benefit and to our detriment.
POINT #1: "A LITTLE OF BOTH GOES A LONG WAY"
-Idealism keeps pushing us forward, helps break boundaries and explore possibilities. Realism turns ideas into practical actions, working with what is doable NOW.
POINT #2: "TOO MUCH OF BOTH GETS YOU TO THE SAME PLACE -- NOWHERE"
-Idealism can get caught up in fantasy and perfectionism. Realism can fail to strive for anything greater or pursue taking risks. Either way, too much of one or the other leads to a type of depression and inaction.
POINT #3: "SACRIFICE IS A MINDSET"
-The idea of sacrifice is a perception that we have decided is of value. Sacrifice doesn't acknowledge the joy that can occur in between, fosters entitlement and values external results over experience. Also, if you feel like everything is such a sacrifice, what's the point?

The B&E Podcast #069
"How We Rationalize Ourselves Away From Our True Calling"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Our egos have very clever and convincing arguments and reasons for us to take the comfortable route - avoiding the pursuits that we are called to. When we learn to recognize those rationalizations and the underlying beliefs fuelling them, we can make powerful and mindful choices towards more authentic paths.
POINT #1: "EGO RATIONALIZATION"
-The ego is a cunning adversary that uses very calculated reasons to avoid and move away from our most joyous endeavors. We can use the ego to examine our beliefs and transcend those nonconstructive rationalizations, getting in touch with our deepest drives.
POINT #2: "RATIONALIZE TOWARDS YOUR VALUES"
-Just as we have an autopilot voice that moves us away from our dreams and ideals, we can consciously use rationalization to bring us closer towards them. Why DOES it make sense to move towards your calling?
POINT #3: "GET BACK TO THE KID IN YOU"
-We often dismiss the voice of our inner child, feeling it's silly and not of value in the world. Our inner child can bring up feelings of inadequacy and smallness, but it also brings feelings of freedom, play, and wonder. Don't miss out on all the good stuff!

"Making the Most of Your Champions & Challengers"
Soundcloud Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Our paths as artists are not all rosy nor are they all gloom. We have our fair share of supporters and people/organizations who will test us with their views and opinions. When we learn to welcome all of it as part of our growth, we get closer in touch with ourselves, our values and what we want to express.
POINT #1: "DON'T FIGHT THE CYNICS"
-Oftentimes we come across ideas and people who are seemingly in conflict with what we think or believe or are trying to do -- when we let go of the need to be right and are able to listen to the message we are being communicated, we find an opportunity to connect with our values and beliefs on a deeper level -- potentially discovering new avenues and strength.
POINT #2: "AS ARTISTS WE ARE ENGAGED WITH THE MYSTERY OF CREATION"
-There is no technique in any craft or discipline that can take the place of our curiosity, our passionate ideas or the fire of our desire. Art and the creative space is not tied to technical skill or intellectual construct.
POINT #3: "ARTISTS ARE CRITICAL THINKERS"
-As an artist, part of our role is to be engaged with the messages from media, friends, family, strangers etc. and formulate our own opinions in a critical way to be expressed back to the world.

"How Artistry is Connected to Our Deepest Values"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
In artistic fields, it can often be challenging to keep your own sense of values in sight. Also, there are many pressures that can make putting your own values in your work something we become averse to doing. Our values are ever evolving, deepening and essential to creating truthful work -- it's not the easiest job but is beyond rewarding.
POINT #1: "DEFINING YOURSELF CAN BE DESTRUCTIVE"
-We often love to declare ourselves by the art forms we express with. Sometimes we tie ourselves so tight to the idea of being the thing we do that we forget our infinite potential as human beings. As artists, we can be whatever we choose to be.
POINT #2: "PRACTICE DETACHMENT FROM RESULTS"
-When we detach from results and our desired outcomes, we become more available to create and more courageous in expressing our values.
POINT #3: "YOU ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE"
-Learning that we have the power of choice in everything we do or don't do means that we can fully and wholeheartedly choose the things we connect to the most. Until we claim our power to say no, we can never truly say yes.

"Expanding Your Territory as a Creative"
Soundcloud Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
How we forget to play and how we forget to recognize the value of play as artists. Play is about curiosity, exploration, and following our creative impulses. It doesn't mean that everything will come out perfect, but it helps us to grow joyfully into new realms.
POINT #1: "PLAY IS ABOUT BEING OPEN"
-Try things on, follow that impulse, see what's there with curiosity! It's not about being right it's about discovering anything that could be. Stop treating your work so seriously and get fascinated by infinite possibility.
POINT #2: "DON'T WORRY ABOUT BEING INTERESTING -- BE INTERESTED"
-We are so caught up in our own shit about being interesting and exciting that we either achieve the opposite or act out inauthentically. When you take the focus off of yourself and out onto the world and into the things that excite you, you live and act with greater authenticity and joy.
POINT #3: "EXPANDING IS UNCOMFORTABLE"
-When we expand into new territory creatively, we get out of our comfort zone. This is a good thing. We might not thrive at first, but that's no reason to feel bad about ourselves. Everything is difficult until it becomes easy. Stay intrigued and learn as you explore without judgment.

"Artistry is Adapting to Our Evolution as Human Beings"

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Another Not So Serious episode brings us into the realms of technology and how we as artists adapt to it. Beyond that, we talk about our ever changing, evolving world and civilization and the value of our openness and courage to explore new ideas.
POINT #1: "TECHNOLOGY IS A TOOL"
-New technology often enters the territory of artistic disciplines. They are almost never necessarily good or bad but offer new ways for us to express if we choose. Instead of shunning new developments out of some sense of tradition, see if there are opportunities to be found.
POINT #2: "ARTISTS EXPLORE ALL THINGS"
-Artists are often called upon to explore and navigate dark and scary territories within themselves and the world to be expressed for others to understand. The important thing is to remain healthy. Pain is a teacher, suffering is optional. Tread the shadows lightly with love, compassion, and forgiveness.
POINT #3: "CHANGE IS HAPPENING"
-No matter how much we resist, the world keeps ticking and the world keeps changing. Nothing will change that. Keep an open mind and explore possibilities to create something beautiful with new technology and awareness.

"Why Artistry is an Experience & Not an Explanation"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We always dig deep on these "Not So Serious" conversations. We stumble upon some interesting realizations about our perceptions and evolution as artists through the questions we ask ourselves at different stages of our lives and what they reveal.
POINT #1: "CURIOSITY IS THE STARTING POINT"
-If you have an interest in getting into an art form or perhaps going in a new direction with one you have been practicing, follow it. It may just be the doorway to a new passion. If not, you at least explored the idea and will probably learn a lot about yourself.
POINT #2: "LEARN WHAT IT IS YOU REALLY DO"
-Perhaps you are beyond the point of curiosity and you may truly love the art you engage with. Now it's important that you begin to look at what you really do in your art. What is the art really doing? What is it really there for? What is the experience that you are looking for within it? WHAT is a great doorway question that will take you beyond your current vision.
POINT #3: "'WHY' IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO ANSWER"
-Knowing why we do what we do is not necessarily something we can logically answer. The answer tends to be more of an experience and an emotion as opposed to an objective assessment. Pursuing the why can send you in an endless circle and become maddening.

"Why Engaging With Depression Deepens Your Art"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
These Not So Serious episodes always seem to get real intense. Like so many that have come before, we cover a lot of territory on this one. We talk about the pressure to get things done -- when it's healthy and when it isn't and how it ties in with motivation. From there we get into the subject of depression and how we can change our stories and use it as a tool to learn, grow and create from.
POINT #1: "PRESSURE IS GOOD WHEN ITS HEART IS IN THE RIGHT PLACE"
-Often pressure can help us focus and get things done, other times it can completely derail us. When the pressure you feel comes from a place of joy and the desire to CHOOSE to get it done, you can do amazing things.
POINT #2: "WHAT STORY ARE YOU TELLING YOURSELF?"
-Most of us are trapped in a circle of devaluing our accomplishments and telling ourselves that it/we are not good enough or our situation has made it impossible. There's no truth in it other than what we are telling ourselves and reinforcing. When we learn to take what we get, no matter how it might make us feel, we learn the lessons quicker and with more joy.
POINT #3: "ENGAGE WITH WHAT YOU ARE"
-As artists our job is to engage with what we are -- the light and the dark. Sometimes we have to go through hard times to learn and grow and truly know an experience so that we can create from it. Depression need not be something to run away from when it hits, but something we engage with with curiosity, knowing that profound insight and transformation lies on the other side.

"How is Trust Integral to Creativity"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
This one begins as a theory we simply wanted to discuss and explore and in the end we discover some fascinating insights and relationships between trust, creativity, authenticity and presence. Trust is something we need to practice and learn but is a game changer when we get it. Lots of personal stories and experiences shed light on an overlooked but highly valuable lesson.
POINT #1: "TRUST KEEPS YOU PRESENT"
-Our ability to trust ourselves and trust our situation is a direct link to our availability to the present moment. Trust opens us to the present and to infinite options.
POINT #2: "TRUST REVEALS AUTHENTICITY"
-When we're not trying to control everything and force certain outcomes, we learn to trust ourselves and who we are -- connecting us to our authentic selves.
POINT #3: "TRUST SHOWS YOU THE LESSONS"
-If we trusted everything that happens in our lives, "good" or "bad", we are better able to see the value of what these outcomes bring. Instead of getting stuck on our ideas of what the right thing is, we can accept what actually is so we can learn and grow.

"The Point Where Art Can No Longer Be Quantified"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
This one dives into the reasons why we get into creating art and finding meaning in what we're doing. If it we're creating art entirely for some kind of quantified reward, then what is the point? In the end, it's all about the love. Listen to know how it gets there!
POINT #1: "THE ICEBERG"
-Not of the Titanic variety, but of the metaphorical sort. Think of your creative career as an iceberg -- There is a whole ton of substance and work that is below the surface, that most people will NEVER see, but it is all necessary for that little piece to show at the top.
POINT #2: "QUANTIFYING OUR WORK CHAINS US DOWN"
-When we're basing the value of our work based on external success, while being of some worth, ultimately it creates fear and restriction when we need to be free to create. Trusting ourselves and not placing external demands on our work allows us to create more authentically.
POINT #3: "EVERYTHING IS ABOUT LOVE"
-The title sums it up. Everything we do in our lives and in our art is about love and all the complications and obstacles we place around it. Find and connect to the love in your work and everything else will become clear.

The B&E Podcast #059
"Challenging the Conventions of Art"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
This becomes an epic talk that goes beyond where we thought it would, all about challenging conventions of one sort or another. We cover technology and innovations in artistic fields and how they fit with our process, and end up in territory about how we help others along with ourselves by being open, compassionate and treating "enemies" as welcome teachers.
POINT #1: "NO MATTER WHAT THE TOOLS, YOU ARE THE WIELDER"
-There are many new innovations and technologies that enter into our potential kit with which to work with. That doesn't always mean that it's the best thing to do. Ultimately it still comes down to the work you are engaging with, what will serve it and what won't.
POINT #2: "WE WORK IN GREY AREAS"
-Part of art means challenging the things we as society accept as truth. Is there such thing as just an "evil" or "good" person? Challenge perception and we challenge convention.
POINT #3: "YOUR ENEMIES CAN BE ALLIES"
-We are often told to get rid of "toxic" people in our lives. Usually these people are reflecting some fear or insecurity we have in ourselves. Instead of shunning these people as destructors, we can welcome them as teachers who offer us insights into our own limitations and give us an opportunity to shine a light on theirs through compassion.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We branch out on a new creative side of industry with Landscape Architect Matt Gibbs. We explore a new form and industry with unique perspectives on the creative process. We discover fascinating similarities and insights into this thing called "art".
POINT #1: "LEARN THAT YOU NEED TO LEARN"
-Even when you're a master educated graduate, the world today asks for us to get more creative and specific about how we apply our skills. Continue to learn and grow and fine tune your skill but more importantly, your passion.
POINT #2: "AUTHENTICITY OFTEN DOESN'T HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH YOU"
-Sometimes we get caught up with how WE will bring our authenticity to something, but often by looking at our subject and what IT authentically is, we uncover solutions to some of our current limitations.
POINT #3: "KNOW YOUR VALUES"
-When we are connected to what we value in the world and what we do, we discover all sorts of creative pathways to doing what we are passionate about.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We talk with entrepreneur and motivational speaker Marco Pasqua on being what it means to be authentic, offering value to others and the world, and how our mistakes and unexpected "setbacks" can be creatively used to open new pathways. Get ready to be inspired.
POINT #1: "THE WORLD WANTS THE AUTHENTIC YOU"
-People are tired and very in tune when others are being dishonest about who they are and their intentions. When we connect to our own sense of value and put that out in the world, people respond.
POINT #2: "FOCUSING ON WHAT YOU GIVE MAKES EVERYTHING SIMPLE"
-When you release yourself from the expectations of what you think should happen or want to happen, you take the pressure off of yourself to more freely and authentically put YOU out into the world.
POINT #3: "OUR FAILURES ARE PERFECT"
-We often beat ourselves up and get depressed when we make mistakes, but when we receive them for what they are and look at them creatively asking, "how is this perfect?" we begin to discover lessons to be learned and new ways forward.

"In the Game of Industry the House Always Wins"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
As artists, it's important for us to acknowledge how we participate within our industry which is there to meet its own needs. When we become a slave or entirely driven by how the industry operates we undermine our own integrity as artists and can lose our entire sense of purpose.
POINT #1: "THE INDUSTRY SERVES ITS OWN INTERESTS"
-Whether you like it or not, artistic industry has its own interests. It is not interested in being fair to you or giving you back what you feel you're putting in. By not putting all of our eggs in one basket and expecting some kind of return from it, we can refocus on doing the things that matter.
POINT #2: "STAY TRUE AND TRUST"
-Getting competitive and comparing ourselves to our peers is typically a study in paranoia. By trusting that we do indeed have an original authentic voice, we can stay focused and present on simply creating.
POINT #3: "NO JOURNEY IS THE SAME"
-There is no one way of getting to what we dream of achieving. There is no one size fits all solution in artistic mediums. Some journeys will move quickly, others may take many years and look vastly different than others -- what matters is that we do what matters to us.

"Being An Artistic Pioneer"
Soundcloud Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We go through a bunch of lessons we've learned from the beginning of our podcasts to now -- not intentionally mind you. We touch on the craft of screenwriting, looking at our fears, challenging our perceptions and connecting with our work and others with truth and authenticity. It takes the spirit of a pioneer to be an artist.
POINT #1: "FEAR IS A MOTIVATOR WITH A CEILING"
-Fear can certainly motivate us to get things done, but it does have its limits. When you begin to realize that the things you fear aren't all that scary, you have to find a deeper connection to what you do which can be challenging but is ultimately freeing and more fulfilling.
POINT #2: "DEPROGRAMMING WHAT WE THOUGHT WE KNEW"
-We have a lot of beliefs we don't realize we carry with us that we may (probably) have learned in childhood that are destructive and sabotaging to creating. Challenge your beliefs, question them and welcome others opinions.
POINT #3: "ARTISTS REMIND US OF WHAT'S IMPORTANT"
-Artists are communicators of things that are bigger than any single one of us -- that's why we do this. We explore the deeper meanings of our lives and existence to remind us of our humanity.

"Why or Why Not to Have a Career in the Arts"
Soundcloud Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Maybe you're thinking about getting into an artistic field -- we get into what kinds of challenges and gifts are down that road, as well as how embracing our artistic side can have huge benefits, whether it's our career field or not.
POINT #1:"THE ARTIST'S LIFE HAS MANY MYTHS"
-Artists are often seen as people who have no responsibility, are lazy and are simply "born" with talent. Being a real artist requires having a talent for your talent and a deep inner call to express something from within. There's a lot more thought, energy, and discipline that goes into an artistic life.
POINT #2: "THERE'S BETTER WAYS TO MAKE LOTS OF MONEY"
-Sure, many artists in different fields become very wealthy and famous, but it's not most and not usually right away. Either you make a commitment for the long haul or chose something where you KNOW the next paycheque is coming.
POINT #3: "BEING AN ARTIST IS BEING ENGAGED TO THE PURSUIT OF TRUTH"
-We can be artists in our lives no matter what we do when we engage and pay attention to our lives. Break out of the routines and examine who we are and what we are. You may pursue that through an artistic endeavor professionally or for fun. No matter what, there are many things to be gained from such a journey.

"So You Feel Like a Phoney... Now What?"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We get into A LOT of stuff on this one. We dissect and examine this idea of being a "phoney", not being good enough, "who am I?" etc. Who are you not to? We look into where all of this might be coming from, its impact and how to keep it in its place.
POINT #1:"THE PAST TELLS YOU YOU'RE A PHONY"
-The past no longer exists, and is full of phantoms that mislead us. We make up stories that tell us that we're not worth it etc. Truth is that the fears that come up from the past are doing nothing to help us when we are trying to create, and that there is no truth in them at all.
POINT #2: "WHO AM I NOT TO?"
-Who am I? Who are you not to? Why do we feel the need for permission? When will you be ready if not now? Trust yourself. Trust the authenticity of your love and passion. When you follow that, the gifts and rewards will be beyond what you can comprehend or predict.
POINT #3: "ATTACK THOUGHTS!!!"
-We attack ourselves and our drives and ambitions out of a false sense of protection all the time. When we're in a mind state of not feeling the need to defend ourselves (especially from imaginary enemies), we become free to create in the world boldly and fearlessly.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
In a very exciting screenwriting conversation, we talk with writer Scott Smith on the creative process. We discuss trusting your voice and trusting the audience's intelligence to understand you.
POINT #1: "WRITE, WRITE, WRITE!"
-From one script to the next to the next, there's new things to learn and exponential growth to be found. You'll always have a new idea, so keep writing!
POINT #2: "FOLLOW YOUR VOICE, FOLLOW WHAT'S EXCITING"
-We often inhibit ourselves with thoughts of what we "should" write or take on -- the answer is to do what is most exciting to you. Maybe the next thing is niche and indie or maybe it will be something more commercial. Either way, you're following your heart.
POINT #3: "THE AUDIENCE KNOWS STORY IN THEIR VEINS"
-Trust the audience's ability to understand your message. We've been told story in so many different medium our entire lives. Let the audience figure it out, they'll be glad you gave them the opportunity.

"Trust Process Over Progress & Here's Why"
Soundcloud Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
As artists, we so often lose sight of the progress we have made. When we focus on our process and that we are ALWAYS in process, we become aware of what our next steps are to take and that even in the moments where it feels like nothing is happening, we are being given exactly what we need.
POINT #1: "PROCESS MEANS COMING UP AGAINST OURSELVES"
-Especially when we're in the middle of our work, our shadows and demons seem to always come out of the woodwork. Ignoring them or escaping them is not the answer. When you don't identify with them and are able to simply observe, we can release old perceptions that no longer serve us and take away their power.
POINT #2: "WHEN IN DOUBT, FOLLOW YOUR VALUE/FOLLOW YOUR JOY"
-On our way to completing our works, knowing what to do next can become shrouded and hard to see. In those moments we are good to check in with ourselves and ask "what's the most joyful thing for me to do right now?". It will lead you to what comes next and next and next.....
POINT #3: "YOU ARE ALWAYS IN PROCESS -- LEARN TO TRUST IT"
-There is never a time when we are no longer in process. We are always learning and everything we come up against can become an opportunity for growth. Trust you are exactly where you need to be.

"The Great Lie of Suffering For Your Art"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
On our grand 50th podcast extravaganza, we accidentally cover a lot of topics that reflect on our conversations of past all the way to now. We go through a lot of territory from practical advice for your creative process to keeping your values in mind, to the place we give suffering and pain in our work.
POINT #1: "THERE'S NO CERTAINTY IN THE DATA"
-You can follow all the rules and hit every note, check every box and yet not create a piece of art or creative work that connects with anyone. Likewise, you can blaze an unknown trail that no one will be able to follow. There's a harmonious balance where it all comes together.
POINT #2: "WHERE WE PUT OUR VALUE"
-Whether we define ourselves by what we have or what we don't have, it makes our enjoyment of our work dependent on external circumstances. You are more valuable than any sum of money large or small. Our joy comes from our own permission of freedom to do what we love.
POINT #3: "SUFFERING FOR YOUR ART IS UNNECESSARY"
-As artists, we often romanticize the tortured icons of our crafts. We even think that to be "good" at what we do REQUIRES it. This is complete nonsense. The value and power of our art comes down to our authenticity, our joy and what we contribute to the world.

"Clearing Out What Pollutes Our Creativity"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We go deep down the rabbit hole with this one. Today we put the past and the future in our sights and explore how our thoughts and feelings around them hinder us as artists. Creativity and presence go hand in hand when it comes to getting truthful in our work.
POINT #1: "PAST AND FUTURE ARE GUILT AND FEAR"
-Our past brings up feelings of regret, loss, and guilt; our thoughts about the future are riddled with anxieties, expectations, and fears. Ultimately you cannot live in either of them, and your thoughts about the past and future are thoughts you are having about them now. They pollute our ability to focus and be present to the tasks at hand.
POINT #2: "CREATIVITY AND PRESENCE ARE SIBLINGS"
-To truly engage with the creative process requires an openness and willingness to remaining present to what's happening as it's happening. When we're consumed with thoughts about the past and the future, we're bringing in a bunch of excess baggage that doesn't serve what we're doing and closes us off to possibility.
POINT #3: "HOW IS THIS PERFECT RIGHT NOW?"
-Ask yourself this question and answer it to bring your attention back to the present moment, reconnect to your joy and creative spark, and banish those polluting thoughts.

"What to Do When Things Aren't Working"
iTunes Link:

THE SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
You're down, you're frustrated, you're confused about your career or this project -- things just aren't working. Sometimes all this situation needs is a shift in perception. Maybe you're exactly where you're supposed to be, maybe this frustration will become part of the process, either way, it's all part of the journey if you choose to see it that way.
POINT #1: "HOW DO YOU KNOW IT'S NOT WORKING?"
-When we're present and open we often uncover that the struggle is part of the process that leads you to that perfect thing.
POINT #2: "WHERE IS THE LOVE?"
-If you're suffering through what you're doing, return to the love that brought you to it. If it's not there anymore, maybe it's time to reevaluate. There's nothing wrong with taking a step back to get a fresh take and a running start.
POINT #3: "PAIN IS A TEACHER"
-Pain is a fact of life, but it's also a teacher that pushes us to new perceptions and with it new wisdom.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
On our Not So Serious Sunday roundtable with documentary filmmaker Jordan Wade, we talk about getting in touch with our curiosity, the virtues of not overthinking our passions and how sometimes the "bad" things we go through are not actually that bad at all.
POINT #1: "FOLLOW YOUR CURIOSITY AND GO"
-When you've got an itch for something, scratch it. Find a way to do it, it can lead you on a journey to discovering or realizing a passion you have inside you.
POINT #2: "WHO SAYS IT HAS TO BE PERFECT?"
-Don't let unnecessary technical barriers prevent you from doing something that excites you. All you need is a curiosity and a passion to open the door for amazing things.
POINT #3: "WHEN THINGS GO BAD, SAY THANK YOU"
-It's hard to keep perspective when something happens to us in our lives that looks like a setback. But who ever said it was a setback? Usually, when we look back on our lives, these moments are often defining for something even more incredible than we could have thought.

The B&E Podcast #047
"Coming of Age as an Artist w/ Sam Davidson"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We have a great chat with musician Sam Davidson, aka Skim Milk, about the dreams and ideas we had as kids or teenagers about our art, and how those can change as we get older. Learning to embrace the change, let go of the past, and how it doesn't compromise who we are or our passion is essential to longevity.
POINT #1: "LETTING GO IS NOT GIVING UP"
-We oftentimes needlessly hang onto old ideas of what our dream or success looks like, having no idea what that would actually mean. As we gain life experience, those dreams can and should shift and change. The important thing to remember is that it doesn't mean you're giving up on your dream, in fact, it can bring more meaning and joy into your art.
POINT #2: "FOLLOW THE JOY"
-Basing joy on something you achieve later is depriving you of being present to the joy you can feel today. When you follow your joy, it is something you can do right now and in every single moment of your life. Then it doesn't matter what your future brings because you have already been living a dream.
POINT #3: "ASK THE WHY"
-Continuing to ask why you are doing what you are doing is an important thing to connect to. Beyond ideas of commercialism and success or not. If you weren't ever going to become a celebrity or household name, would you still do what you're doing?

"The Value of Detaching Yourself From Your Art"
Soundcloud Link:
soundcloud.com/thebandepodcast
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We're thinking of renaming "Not So Serious Sunday" again because of this one. We get into how when we attach and identify ourselves with our works, the things we do, and the results they get, ultimately sabotages our ability to create freely and most importantly -- our joy.
POINT #1: "RESULTS AND SUCCESS ARE PASSING"
-If you are attaching your ability to be happy to your level of "success", you can easily be blown around into highs and horrible lows. Eventually being happy becomes about getting your next fix.
POINT #2: "ATTACHMENT LIMITS YOUR POWER TO BE YOU"
-When you base your value and happiness on something external, getting something, or some idea of success, you subconsciously tell yourself that others determine your ability to be happy. When you're not attached to outcomes or identified with your work you're free to let everything go no matter what happens -- good or bad.
POINT #3: "KNOW THYSELF"
-It's wisdom that has been told to us for ages. Examining ourselves and our beliefs is not the easiest or most comfortable task to undergo, but it is arguably the most noble and profound of endeavors. You'll come up against it sooner or later, so begin to engage with it and be conscious about it.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
On another sweet off the cuff not so serious Sunday conversation, we talk about finding balance in our lives and artistic careers, dedication to continuing to grow and learn, as well as standing on the shoulders of giants. There's also a lot of talk about caterpillars.....
POINT #1: "SOMETIMES YOU JUST GOTTA DIVE IN"
-You might find yourself in a position where a lot of opportunities are coming your way. There's an experience to be gained by saying yes and going for it. It will all lead you to....
POINT #2: "...BALANCE!!!"
-Only by making some decisions and opening up to what there is to learn from your present situation can you go beyond understanding and build wisdom.
POINT #3: "TRANSFORMATION IS INEVITABLE"
-We are not so different from the caterpillar transforming into the butterfly, except we as people will do it many times in our lives. Don't hold on to where you are longer than you have to. Embrace the lessons you're learning NOW and become something greater.

"Being in a Relationship with or as an Artist"
iTunes Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Today we get into the nuances of a romantic relationship with or as an artist. As we discover, it comes down to what's important in all relationships. Being encouraging and open is still the key.
POINT #1: "ARTISTS HAVE A FEW PARTICULARS, BUT RELATIONSHIPS ARE THE SAME"
-Artists can and tend to be sensitive types who work irregular hours and don't make consistent incomes, but other than that it's the same relationship foundations that will make it come together.
POINT #2: "SUPPORT EACH OTHER"
-An artist has a lot of insecurity in their line of work, so support and encouragement is huge. AS an artist, don't think that you're the only one who needs it -- everyone is going through their struggles.
POINT #3: "YOUR RELATIONSHIP IS AN ACT OF CREATION"
- At the end of the day, it takes two to make a relationship work. It requires love and joy, trust and openness, understanding and nurturing -- make time for two people to be with one another.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
As artists, we are communicators. It's important that we are aware of the ideas that we are putting out into the world, especially when we're dealing with subject matter in violence and sex. We then take a small detour in trusting where we're at, communicating our ideas and allowing ourselves to do something that isn't great. Everything is an opportunity to learn and grow.
POINT #1: "YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MESSAGE"
-The things we say with our art have an impact no matter how much you might doubt it. It comes down to what you want to put out into the world. Be conscious and be aware.
POINT #2: "YOUR VOICE COMES OUT WHEN YOU TRUST YOURSELF"
-Second guessing and editing yourself while you're in the middle of working is counterproductive. You don't know what the "right" answer is. By engaging and being present with your work you uncover the gems and prove to yourself that your ideas are worth it.
POINT #3: "CREATIVE PROCESS IS A MARATHON"
-If you're running a marathon, going back to redo a certain section makes absolutely no sense. You finish the race and then see where you can do better once it's done. The same is true with the creative process.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
On Not So Serious Sunday, we talk about how identifying with our dreams can become a painful ordeal. When we learn how to have lives with other interests and pursuits we can discover a whole new meaning and perspective to our vocations.
POINT #1: "GET A HOBBY OR DISCIPLINE"
-Whether you're an actor, a writer, a musician or filmmaker -- whatever it is, it's important that you have another interest that's unrelated to your art. It helps refill the well and lends perspective on what you do.
POINT #2: "SLAVE TO THE GAME"
-Claim your power of choice. If you choose to play the games of the industry, that's fine -- know what you're in for and go for it. If it's not your interest, learn to blaze your own path or take a step back and reevaluate your sense of purpose and connection to it.
POINT #3: "THERE WILL BE BLOOD"
-It doesn't matter our level of "success" or how far we ascend the ladder, we will come up against new challenges. You can resist it or you can be present to it and move through it, finding a new appreciation for where you are.

"Artistic Process Meets Industry Awareness"
iTunes Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
The vision you have for your art is where it all begins and where it hopefully ends -- in between is the process. Sometimes creativity happens within the process and structure itself and can launch you to a greater understanding of your work. Beyond that, it's also important to be aware and respectful of what your industry expects from you. That doesn't mean that you have to follow it but it does allow you to make a more informed and inspired decision.
POINT #1: "CREATIVITY COMES IN FORMS YOU DON'T EXPECT"
-Sometimes creative inspiration comes in the form of HOW you do your work -- your process or structure. These can give you new avenues in taking your vision to the next level, so be open to creativity in its many forms.
POINT #2: "BEING BLIND TO THE INDUSTRY AND BUSINESS CAN WORK AGAINST YOU"
-We often neglect or ignore our respective creative industry as a means of protecting ourselves, irritation or any number of reasons -- that doesn't mean you should. Being aware of industry demands and expectations as well as having respect for it can serve you in making more conscious decisions to aid you in having a career.
POINT #3: "YOUR VISION IS ALWAYS YOUR GREATEST VALUE"
-Having your ducks in a row is great, but we are drawn to people's passion and vision more than anything else. Bring people into your vision and then the rest is simply the cherry on top. Be authentic and connect to others through your most valuable asset, you!

"Rooting Out Cliches & Being Original"
iTunes Link:
https://itun.es/i6hv7ck
SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
The creative worlds are sometimes the most prone to falling into those old, tired, rehashed, reused, derivative ideas -- the cliches. They will almost inevitably come up but there's no need to fear them. Being aware of where they are presenting themselves can often open up new roads and present unique opportunities for your own originality.
POINT #1: "YOU WERE BORN TO BE A CLICHE"
-Most of us are so overexposed to social marketing and engineering that it's easy to unconsciously start putting that into our work. Being aware of it means that we can make conscious choices for our own voice to be heard.
POINT #2: "THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH FEELING FAMILIAR"
-If your work has a familiarity to it, it's not necessarily a bad thing. It makes it accessible and opens your audience to the unique, original messages you want to communicate.
POINT #3: "YOU DO HAVE A UNIQUE VOICE"
-Wondering whether you have anything original or unique to say is a moot argument to have with yourself. You have a specific experience of life that gives you a take on the world that no one else has. Find that voice by asking yourself questions and valuing the answers you come up with.

iTunes Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Over the course of our lives, we have formed all sorts of beliefs based on our experiences and things we've heard, but that doesn't make our beliefs true. Very often we hold beliefs that serve only to contain and limit us from pursuing our dreams and our happiness.
POINT #1: "IT'S NOT DEBATABLE, YOU HAVE BELIEFS"
-We've been forming them since the day we were born and continue to do so every day of our lives. It's important that we examine them and are conscious of the way we interpret and create meaning surrounding our experiences.
POINT #2: "THERE'S NO NEED TO BEAT YOURSELF UP"
-We make mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes are how we have been looking at things. Forgive yourself and learn from it. Being hard on yourself will only make it more difficult to see the lessons and move forward.
POINT #3: "EXAMINING YOUR BELIEFS IS EXCITING IF YOU ALLOW IT"
-Self-reflection can be an intimidating prospect that can bring up a lot of resistance, but when you get in the practice of doing it, it becomes a powerful tool for transformation and creating a more joyful life.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
On another free-for-all Not So Serious Sunday, we go from Seinfeld to creating empathy to the value and misconceptions of structure. As well as sandwiches... and how sandwiches pertain to creativity. Not the most poetic metaphor but it works! Have a listen!
POINT #1: "TAKE INSPIRATION, DON'T TAKE THE IDEA"
-Learn what you like from the works you enjoy most, but don't try to recreate it. Make the next great thing!
POINT #2: "EMPATHY & COMPASSION"
-If you don't illicit these feelings from your audience, no one will really care or will connect with your work. That doesn't mean that you can't take on dark themes or ideas -- it will, in fact, take it to a deeper level.
POINT #3: "MAKE ALLIES WITH STRUCTURE"
-Don't think you're above certain structures within your creative medium. Structure permeates every natural part of our existence as well as in our creations. The word may imply containment or even imprisonment but it will actually free you to create the next great thing.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
So much of our learning from an early age has been backward and limits our full potential. We've misplaced our values and where our value comes from. Let's unlearn our past conditioning and open up to a world full of potential and creation.
POINT #1: "QUESTION EVERYTHING YOU'VE LEARNED"
-So many of the paradigms and status quo wisdom from the past are no longer applicable or are short sighted. Find a new way forward with integrity and authenticity.
POINT #2: "YOUR VALUE IS ALWAYS WITH YOU"
-No one person, degree or amount of money can tell you what your value is. It comes down to you and what you're willing to accept as being your worth and getting acquainted with the value that you bring to the world.
POINT #3: "HOW YOU TREAT OTHERS IS A REFLECTION OF YOURSELF"
-It may seem like token advice, but it comes from a very profound place of truth. The happiest, productive people in the world have a lot of compassion for others and that begins with having compassion with yourself.

"How Do You Know When You're Ready?"
iTunes Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
The whole idea that you are ready or not is kind of a fallacy because how will you ever know for sure. We discuss how failure is the best teacher and why our own self-image is what holds us back from doing what we are most passionate about. Being ready is partly something you prepare for, but it is also something you have to overcome as you go.
POINT #1: "BEING READY IS NOT BEING INFALLIBLE"
-There's a point where you have to exit the "classroom" and go out and do it. Actions turn knowledge to wisdom. You can't be prepared for everything and application will only deepen your understanding.
POINT #2: "INDEPENDENCE IS GREAT, WORKING TOGETHER WILL TAKE YOU FURTHER"
-We all have our deepest passion. Don't get bogged down in the things that don't serve that. Someone else has a passion for the other parts related to what you do and can make it more than what you thought possible.
POINT #3: "NO ONE CAN GIVE YOU WHAT YOU REALLY WANT, ONLY YOU CAN"
-Set your goals based on the state of mind that you want. Nothing external can give you peace or happiness -- at the end of the day, it's your decision in every moment.

We discuss the pros and cons of the big studio system and how it's not necessarily any better or worse than any other level of production, just different. We also examine the things we can learn from the studio system and how we can help make our industry healthier and more collaborative.
POINT #1: "THOSE BIG BLOCKBUSTERS CAN TEACH YOU"
-A lot of these big movies and trends in movies can tell you a lot about what's going on in the world right now. What are audiences identifying with?
POINT #2: "EVERYONE HAS A PASSION ONE WAY OR ANOTHER"
-Some people are business people and some are artistic. If you're collaborating with each other, ask how you can help the other. It's a much healthier way of working than being defensive and on guard.
POINT #3: "FINDING THE MIDDLE GROUND"
-There are studios, production companies, and fully independents. They each have benefits and suit different stories better than others. Which end of the spectrum do you fit with?

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
On another juicy Not So Serious Sunday, we further explore the concept of how giving and helping others does more for us than trying to protect our own interests. We also discuss how seeing the world from a place of abundance or scarcity has a deep effect on our ability to create and be authentic to who we are.
POINT #1: "APPRECIATE THE PEOPLE WHO HELP YOU"
-You would be surprised by how meaningful it can be to the people in your life when you tell them specifically why you appreciate them and how they've helped you. Get in the practice of gratitude!
POINT #2: "ABUNDANCE AND SCARCITY"
-Do you see the world as out to get you or the world as your oyster? Guess which one frees you to be more authentic and create more freely? Guess which one creates MORE abundance?
POINT #3: "WHAT'S YOUR PRICE?"
-How much would it take for you to "sell out" and give up what you've pursued in your life? Being honest with yourself can teach you a lot about yourself.

"How Our Goals Often Mislead Us From Being Our True Self"
iTunes Link:

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We dive deep into the decisions we make in our lives and how the goals we make are not always in our best interest. In fact, we haven't been taught how to set goals for ourselves in a way that is authentic to who we are. Set goals based on the experience you want and not the rewards it might bring.
POINT #1: "PUT THE EXPERIENCE YOU WANT FIRST"
-We often set goals by some outcome we think will make everything better. Rather, set your goals by the kind of experiences you want to have in your life ON THE WAY! When you begin to act in this way, the rewards become meaningless regardless the outcome.
POINT #2: "RELEARN GRATITUDE"
-We've been told to be grateful from a place of feeling guilty. Find the things in your life that are truly joyful and give your gratitude!
POINT #3: "HELP THE WORLD"
-We all need each other. This is a fact. Begin to look at your passion and what you do as a way of helping your community and the world. Give and you shall receive.

POINT #1: "DGAF!"
-As the title suggests, there's a great value in learning not to care about the right things. What people may or may not think of you and what you're doing is a great place to start.
POINT #2: "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE WORK"
-When you remove yourself and your audience from the equation of your process, you can tap into the honesty and integrity you need to create authentic work.
POINT #3: "JUST DO IT!"
-Whether you think you're good enough or not, creating means actually creating something tangible. Your first attempts might be terrible but there's always the next one.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
With musician Seth Sharp, we talk about some of the myths around living a creative life and the importance of asking "why" when we begin down a path of an artistic career.
POINT #1: "FIND JOY IN THE WORK"
-A small percentage of what you love to do will actually be spent doing it, the rest is setting the stage. Find a way to enjoy that part too.
POINT #2: "YOUR CREATOR HAT AND YOUR EDITOR HAT"
-When you begin it's important to make it play and get the creative inspiration out until it's completed. Only THEN should you go back and start on the editing process.
POINT #3: "WHY DO YOU WANT TO BE AN ARTIST?"
-At some point, you will have to answer this question whether you've already had success or not. When it becomes hard, go back to where you first had the desire. It will either remind you and keep you going or it will tell you to move on.

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
We get into past experiences and how they can limit us as creatives. Our realm is in the unknown and in trusting our truth, our experience, and voice. Relying on past successes is a huge trap. Find a new way.
POINT #1: "DON'T GET STUCK IN THE PAST"
-We can learn our lessons through past works, successes, and triumphs but also learn when to move on. After all, we can only live and experience now.
POINT #2: "BEGIN WHERE IT DOESN'T BEGIN"
-What if you told the story where it wouldn't traditionally be? What's the after? What's the beginning? What would that look like? What if it was a different drama? There are infinite roads to pursue.
POINT #3: "CHALLENGE YOURSELF -- YOUR TRUTH IS WAITING TO BE TOLD"

SUMMARY OF THE PODCAST:
Another "Not So Serious Sunday" with Brandon and Evan. On this one we talk about trusting your audience, going on a journey in any artistic endeavor and how being "nice" is holding your art back from being authentic.
POINT #1: "ART IS FOUND IN THE EXPERIENCE"
-There's only so much you can plan before you begin your journey. You cannot control or prepare for everything. Remain open and curious.
POINT #2: "BEING NICE MIGHT JUST BE A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT"
-We often use "being nice" as an excuse not to express our truth -- it covers up what we think and who we are. You can still be a kind person and communicate with honesty.
POINT #3: "EMBRACE THE CREATIVE ROAD TRIP"
